Howdy all, hope all is well. Just a note letting everyone know what is going on at the range and with the saloon. The new berm is going in and hopefully it will be done soon. As for the saloon, first of all thanks to all the guys that helped in setting the poles and lifting up the saloon front. That brings us to the next step. Being it is going to be a nice day this Saturday, we decided to see if we could get the floor on the saloon done, before the weather changes. So if anyone can help on Saturday, that would be great. The plan is to eat breakfast Saturday morning at Marlin’s truck stop (east end of Bismarck) at 7:30 a.m. and then go out to the range, starting work about 9:00 a.m. Hope to see ya at the range! There were 17 shooters today, that was with 3 new shooters. We shot 4 stages in 4 1/2 hours. We all had a great time and harrassed everyone (a little) on misses. The new timer works really good. It makes it a lot easier for keeping track of everyone’s time and everyone can see their own time. The board with everyone’s alias helped speed things up with everyone seeing and knowing when they were up to load. One of the new shooters was a young girl around 14-16 years old. She will be one heck of a shooter with a little practice. She took about 20 seconds off her time from her first stage to her 3rd stage and did really well on the 4th stage. Lady Angie Oakley

How many of us have wondered who’s who amongst our fellow shooters? Well, wonder no more, the printing press has made its way to town and we can now issue posters. Yes, you will now be able to put a name on that face you keep seeing on the street or in a dance hall or saloon in some dusty town. As a side note, if any of you would like to have an 8″ x 10″ print of your mugshot, send me an email. For those whose picture has been taken, I need your tagline in order to complete the mugshot. For the others, don’t worry, I’ll be there at our shoot in August, road conditions and weather permitting. Thunder Wolf

The time has come to name our shooting annex, but we need your help. If you have an idea for a catchy name, send it via email to Thunder Wolf. You have two weeks, until August 8, to send in your idea. We will then make a selection of the twelve most interesting names and set up a poll on the site to let you decide the final name. The author of the winning name will earn braggin’ rights to naming the annex! Thunder Wolf

In the meantime, keep warm and be sure to look at our calendar for our upcoming practices and matches at the indoor range. Thunder Wolf

Our final match of the year was shot under threatening skies, but went off without a hitch. There was a lot happening, and happening fast! First… Congratulations to Dakota Psycho as he took top honors in the regular match! The “Gold Rush” team event was won by the team of Blackwater Bill and Rough Rider Ray. Good job! The fastest time in the qualifying round for the man-on-man event was Blackwater Bill with a 4.59 second run! (Told you things happened fast) And the Winner of the Man-On-Man Shootout was none other than Not-So-Slim Jim. Congratulations! I’d like to thank all who came out and shot with us this year. You made it another sucessful year for the Dakota RoughRiders. Good Lord willin’, we can gather again next year and fight all them bad hombres, round up all those strays and save all them that need savin’. Hope you all had as much fun this year as I did. Thanks again, Blake Stone

You couldn’t have ordered a better day as a few of the RoughRiders gathered to try to beautify the range (aka fix up the registration shack). Bright sunshine and sunny dispositions combined to make this work day a real pleasure. We were under the direct supervision of Two X Tom, who brought a trailer full of know-how and materials, and a truck full of patience. We really appreciate it, Tom! Assistant carpenters for the day were Dakotan, Dakota Rattler, Dakota Dealer, Heck Catcher, Doc Syn, Cheval and Blake Stone. Everyone pitched in as they could, and the shack is now better than half complete. Check out the pics on this website to see the progress. A big thank you to all involved. Don’t forget… We have a match this Sunday, October 4th. Registration at 12, shooting starts at 1 p.m. Blake Stone

Well folks, as the sun sets on another shooting season at Moffit, I’d like to take this oopportunity to thank everyone who turned out for our shoots andmade this year a complete success. I only have one complaint about this season…some people are shooting entirely too fast! There’s got to be a safety issue here. Don’t ya think? But seriously, this was a great year! It was fun to see the vast improvement of not only our new shooters, but some of the old timers cranked it up a notch, too. Good competition brings out the beset in all of us. And the competition here can get pretty hot, heavy and hilarious! Good comraderie brings out a feelling of family. This year we became a closer knit bunch of cowboys and cowgirls as we worked together to turn out fun shoots for everyone. We’ve seen a lot fo new shooters this year and hope that next year they will continue to be a part of our group. As for the last shoot of the season, we had 20 shooters. Johnny Otter made the trip from the Southeast to show us how things are done. Joe Coe was hot on his trail all day, but came up just a bit short when the final tallies where in. Well donne, Johnny! I’d also like to congratulate the Clean Match Shooters. We had 6 Clean Shooters representing 6 different categories! Dakota Dealer shooting (double) Duelist; Doc Hell, Silver Senior; Joe Coe, Modern; Misty Target, Ladies Traditional; Pistolero Shay, 49er; and Tom C, Senior. Congrats!! Keep checking the website for news updates. We are planning a couple more work days at the range to finish up a few things. We’ll use the website to announce when they will be. In the words of Theodore Roosevelt, “I may not shoot well, but I know how to shoot often!” Thank you to all for a great year! Blake Stone

At this point I usually make some comment about how the weather was really lousy, but being the cowboys and cowgirls that we are, we managed to get through it. However, for the August 3rd shoot the weather was really nice, in fact it was probably the niceset day we have had all year. Low 80’s with a nice breeze (not a wind, but a breeze), the new shooting bays and stage fronts were looking good, and our friends Segundo, Trail Driver, and Grease Cup came up from South Dakota, Deadly Dale and Stephanie came over, and Roughrider Ray, Renegade Rene, Beowowe Mama, Seldom Sober, and Seldom Awake Kid even made the trip from Belfield to shoot with us. I figure we had shooters from across the state to initiate the new cowboy annex. With such a good turn out and high spirits, you would expect an absolutely wonderful day of shooting. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for quite a few people. There were a lot of equipment malfunctions and procedurals to go around. I’m not saying that we didn’t have a great time, but it would seem that our mental capacity was stretched to its limits. The old saying that when the buzzer goes off your brains go to your boots might be a little bit of an undersstatement. In some cases the brains hit the boots at the loadding table. Especially when yours truly stages his guns wrong and then proceeds to shoot the guns in the wrong order. Yes, I did write the stage, yes, I did read the scenario, and no, I was not the first shooter. Excuses…well I just don’t have one. In fact, this was not the first, nor the last little brain toot of the day. Someone (I won’t mention Joe’s name) made a similar mistake on the same stage. Yes, targets were shot out of order and guns just didn’t want to play, but, by golly, we got the new annex broke in right. With 25 shooters we had a really great day. It was also great to see Sandy, Striped Buffalo’s mom come out to see her daughter in action, and Striped Buffalo was polite enough to put on a show. Watch out, Doc Syn, your daughter is gettin’ pretty good with the six guns. Misty Target will have to shoot with the ladies next year, but I think that Striped Buffalo will step in andd fill her shoes and make us all here at the Dakota RoughRiders mighty proud. Before we can shoot at our range again, we are going to help out the Missouri Valley Shooting Association with their annual kids day at McLain Bottoms public range If there is anyone that wants to help out, we won’t turn them away. We plan on being there at 8:00 a.m. and get things set up. The kids should arrive around nine. We will put on a demonstration at 9ish and then let the kids shoot until noon, at noon we will break for lunch and then do another demonstration and then run until 4:00. I sure understand that some people can’t be out there all day but if you want to come help out for an hour or two we would be more than grateful. I hope to see a lot of faces at Bordertown Shootout over Labor Day weekend, and if we don’t cross paths there, hopefully in September. Until then, keep your stick on the ice. Remember, were all in this together. Dakota Dealer
July 27, 2008
“Home, home on the range.” Yes, ladies and gentlemen (and children of all ages), the Dakota RoughRiders have a newe home. It is still at the same range, but we have completed enough work on the new annex to allow us to shoot there for our August 3rd match. We really need to thank some people for all the hard work: Cheval, Tom C, Doc Syn, Blake Stone, Heck Catcher, Sam May, Dean Murrey and his son Tyler, Dakota Dealer and that tall fellow, Joe. We also need to thank all of those whose planning and dedication in the beginning made this shooting annex possible. When you see these people, please shake their hand and say “thank you”. They put in a lot of work. It was a hot and dirty job (I think I washed an acre of dirt down the shower drain) but the results are going to be well worth it. After the rain on Saturday night, not much got done on Sunday. Weeds were sprayed and timbers were cut so that we have enough material to finish the third and fourth shooting bays. The decision was made to use the two new bays for the rest of the year and to do more construction later when the weather is a little cooler. The fronts that were constructed over the winter were moved into place (Dave Shaffer’s Saloon went in first) so that we will have some all new stages to shoot in August. I know that I have been pushing the lever silhouette matches, but it would be nice to have some more cowboy shooters make an appearance at these matches. They are really relaxing, no set up, no tear down, you can shoot in shorts and a ball cap, and you can use the cowboy ammunition you already have. There are some people that show up at these matches that I think we could corrupt and include in our sport. We will be doing the set up for our August 3rd match after the silhouette match on the 2nd. With the new bays in place, this should be an easier thing to do. With that, I hope to see a lot of people at our next shoot, even if they just come out to look at what we have accomplished and see where things are going. To say we are excited about what is going on would be an understatement, so until next time shoot straight. Dakota Dealer
