Light Rifle

Discipline Description

Light Rifle is a competition that is cheap to get into, it requires no special equipment. The game is typically shot indoors with a bolt action .22 rifle, although semi-automatic or single shot rifles are allowed if not restricted by the match director. The rifle cannot have less than a 2.0 pound trigger and must not weigh more than 8.5 pounds including sights. The rifle can be equipped with any scope or open sights. If the rifle has an adjustable butt plate it must be in the center position. Some match directors in the state do not allow thumbhole stocks.

There are various types of light rifle matches in the rulebook, but we shoot the standing variation at 50 feet and occasionally at 50 yards. Slings are not allowed and no artificial support can be used including stiff shooting coats. Matches are normally 100 shots but you may find 60 or 120 shot matches. We allow 1 minute per shot in a block time but the regulations do allow the match director to allow up 1.5 minutes. New shooters normally shoot in the master class but after shooting 120 rounds in competition the NRA will send you a classification card, after which you will then compete with people of your same skill level for awards. The goal is to shoot the highest score possible, on the 50 ft target the outside 6 ring is 3.374 inches wide and the 10 ring is .439 inches and the center x-ring(used for breaking ties) is the size of a pencil eraser .218 inches.
