Varmint Rifle Match – September

September 15, 2014

We had a heck of a match today. Sixteen shooters shooting multiple categories. I sure wasn’t prepared for that! I had to rework the scoreboard a couple of times and jockey shooters around. Thanks to the cooperation of the competitors, we got it sorted out.

I had new targets printed for this match and they seemed to work out well. They’re heavier paper and the silhouettes are orange instead of black. Now, you can see your bullet holes in the critters. I also had small sheets printed with a miniature target on them to help shooters keep track of which critter was shot. Still getting cross-fires though. I have a feeling that is going to be a regular problem. People tend to get in the zone and forget to check their target number after recoil.

Collin Weisz did a number on my head. As you can see from the tally sheet, he shot two different rifles in the Custom class, shooting one of them during the Factory relay. Nothing in the rules says you can’t. We just never ran into the situation. Sure messed with my head for a bit!

Bob Cunningham did something I’ve not seen before. He loaded his .38-40 bullet first and then charged a case, placing the powdered case into the chamber and closing the breech. Unfortunately, it’s doesn’t seem to be a method well suited to a timed match. Kudos for trying, Bob.

We had four youth shooters, three of whom shot two youth categories. Jalen Granlie had his factory rifle sighted in for 200 yards so, he decided to shoot with the adults.

The wind and the temperature weren’t bad. Everyone seemed to improve their scores considerably on the second target.

Collin took 1st and 3rd in Custom with Doug Kitzan taking 2nd.

Tom Liebel more than doubled his first score on the second target giving him 1st place in Factory class. Shane Roe took 2nd and Tim Liebel came in 3rd.

In the AR class, Dave Hintz took 1st, Doug Kitzan 2nd and “Two-gun” Collin Weisz took 3rd.

In Youth Factory, it was Trevor Howard in 1st, Amanda Hintz in 2nd and Rylee Ferguson taking 3rd.

In Youth AR, Rylee Ferguson took 1st, Amanda Hintz in 2nd and Jalen Granlie taking 3rd.

A big thanks to all for participating and helping out with scoring and target changes. There will be a final match for the season on October 18. If you’re not out hunting, see you there!
