Results and bulletin for the 2014 NRA Open 3-position Regional Championship

February 24, 2014

Thanks to everyone who participated in our 3rd Open 50 yard Indoor NRA Smallbore Regional Championship. We had 31 competitors this year compared to 35 competitors in 2013. Still a great turnout and some great scores fired. I hope everyone had a good time at the event and I hope to see everyone back next year. Please tell your fellow shooters to put this on their schedule for next year (which will most likely be late February 2015), and let’s see if we can add more shooters to the event – and yes Jeremy, I’ll TRY and remember donuts at our next event (the Junior 4P State Champ and Sectional in March).

Thanks to all that helped me put on this event. It started on our Junior night when parents from our club helped put together target carriers, mark targets and prepared the range. Dave Tokach and Bob Cunningham were the range officers. Tina Thompson and Mary Kay scored targets, and Sally Fairbanks and Rand McLeod helped post scores. Thanks to the gang that helped break down the range at the end of the match on Sunday including Dave, Bob, Tom Schiwal, Bill Langer and Rich Butler. It sure helps me get things done and put away when everyone pitches in.

Congratulations to Carmen Fry – our Gold medalist. Carmen fired an excellent score of 1189/1200. Congratulations to Joe Martin, the Silver Medalist, with a score of 1182/1200 and Samantha Peterson, the Bronze Medalist with a score of 1179-61x. Samantha’s score was just ahead of Lana Fairbanks scores of 1179-60x. In all, 7 juniors fired scores 1173 or better which is outstanding. I know this is the “easy” conventional 50 yard target – however, these are excellent scores fired by these junior competitors (you have to go to 8th place before you find an adult on the score sheet). This also keeps the streak going for junior competitors in North Dakota this season – that is an adult (using a scope – or iron sights) has not medaled at any of our Open Sectional Championships this season. Us adults are gettin’ old – but there a lot of excellent junior competitors out there putting up some great scores – congratulations to all of you.

Next weekend is the North Dakota Air Rifle State Championship, and the NRA Junior Air Sectional Championship (Standing) in Devils Lake (call Rick Jorgenson NOW) this match has been very full the last years. We have a growing number of air rifle competitors in this state, sign up now. The North Dakota Junior 4-Position State and Sectional Championship will be held the weekend of March 8 and 9, in Bismarck. Contact me (Tom Thompson) if you plan to attend this event. Then we have a Civilian Marksmanship Program 3-Position Air Rifle Championship (Buffalo, ND) and an NRA 3P Junior Air Sectional (Ayr, ND) the weekend of March 14 and 15. We will have our Bismarck-Mandan Junior Club Championship on March 22. Finally, we will have the North Dakota Open 4-Position State Championship and Sectional in Grand Forks on March 29 and 30. And you thought March Madness had something to do with basketball. Get your air and smallbore rifles ready, we are in the heart of the 2014 indoor season and in a few weeks it will be over.

Thanks to all and good shooting – Tom Thompson
