March 16, 2015

Sponsored by the Bismarck-Mandan Rifle and Pistol Association and the National Rifle Association

Fired on March 14 and 15, 2015

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2015 North Dakota Junior 4-Position State Championship and the NRA Junior 4-Position Sectional match and thanks to all that helped me put on this event again this year. Thanks to Melissa Langer, Tim Klein, Tom and Melody Schiwal, Dave Hintz, Walt Fairbanks, Sandy Fried and Bob Cunningham, and the other parents that helped set up and take down the range, score targets, post scores, data entry, set and retrieve targets and donate food (that was some great mac-n-cheese by Tom Schiwal and pulled pork by Sandy Fried on Saturday! – I only got ONE helping of the pulled pork – but I was assured by Tina that I will make it). Again, I really appreciated everyone’s efforts – this helps me to keep the event going (even on my time schedule) and get things done when everyone pitches in.

Congratulations to our 2015 Junior State Champion: Katie Zaun. Katie fired an excellent score of 395-29x. Katie is in the Sub-Junior category – this is an excellent score for a Sub-Junior competitor. Last year we had 6 competitors for scores of 390 or better – this year we had 6 competitors fire scores of 390 or better in the State match and 10 – 390+ scores in the Sectional match – this is outstanding. Brett Christianson and Katie Zaun also fired 100-10x prone scores which equals the Junior 4-Positon state record. There were also 22 10-shot target cleans this weekend including 18 prone, 2 sitting, one kneeling and one STANDING! Overall, there was some very impressive marksmanship by many of the competitors this weekend.

State Championship Team scores were also impressive. The Buffalo Sharpshooter – Girls with firing members Mari Butler, Emily Haag, Megan Tichy and Katie Zaun fired a 1565-93x for the win.

In the Sectional Championship, Mari Butler fired an impressive 396-28x for the gold medal. Katie Zaun fired a 394-28x for the silver medal and Tyler Linneman fired a 392-25x for the bronze medal.

The Buffalo Shartpshooters – Girls also took the sectional team match firing a very impressive 1572-100x which is an excellent team score. This is a 393-25x average per team member. It will be interesting to see how this score fairs when the national results are posted in late May or early June. Results are posted on the NRA Competitions web site. Be sure to start checking the NRA web page in late May for the posting of the Junior Sectional Championship scores.

Overall it was a great weekend with many juniors firing excellent scores and a lot of personal bests. We had 27 competitors in the matches this weekend. Congratulations to all – keep up the hard work and again – don’t forget to have fun. Pass the word on to your other team members on their home ranges and encourage them to come out and participate in these events.

The 2015 smallbore season is moving fast to its conclusion. In just a couple weeks, it will be over (except for the spring outdoor match). I’ve listed the remaining upcoming events for this season below. Look at your calendar, make your plans and give the match contact a call now!

I plan to have all the awards with me next weekend in Grand Forks – so you might as well come to Grand Forks and get your award – and while you’re there you might as well shoot the Open 4-Position State Championship and Open Sectional match – call Denny Coulter now!

Thanks to all and good shooting – Tom Thompson, 701-255-4601
