Sponsored by: Bismarck-Mandan Rifle and Pistol Association

Fired: March 22, 2014

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2014 Club Championship. Our 2014 Club Champion is Lana Fairbanks. Lana fired a new club championship score of 393/400. This score surpasses Luke Preszler’s score of 391/400 set on March 21, 2009. Our first place Junior was Taylor Boeshans with a 385-20x. In the Intermediate-Junior category, Kohl Klein led the way with a 388-17x. Amanda Hintz fired a 384-19x for first place Sub-Junior. Jase Jarding was second with a 376-14x and Brady Fried was the third Sub-Junior with a 358-8x. Taylor also fired a 99-7x for a new Junior Club Championship record for the kneeling position.

The team match winners were Karsten Klein and Jayden Krush firing an excellent score of 345/400. Just behind them in second place was Jase and Kaden Ottenberg with a 344-8x, and our third place team was Brady and Nolan Maher with a 340-8x. Congratulations to all the competitors that participated in our 2014 Club Championship event.

This year we had 3 junior competitors receive their Junior Distinguished Award. Jacob Langerud fired his last qualifying scores on January 19 at the Junior Olympic qualifying match in Minot. Amanda Hintz completed her award on February 8 at the North Dakota 3-Position Junior State Championship in Minot, and Jase Jarding fired his final qualifying score at our club championship. Congratulations to all three of these competitors. This is the first time in the 22 years of our program that we’ve had 3 juniors awarded the Junior Distinguished award in one year.

Congratulations also goes out to Lana Fairbanks, Kohl Klein and Amanda Hintz on qualifying for the Junior Olympic National Shooting Championships that will be held in April at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. These competitors fired qualifying scores at the State Junior Olympic qualifying match in Minot in January. The Junior Olympic Shooting Championships brings out the best junior marksman in the United States. Junior Olympic qualifying scores have been going up over the years. It takes some hard effort and dedication in practice sessions and matches in order to get your skill level up to the level necessary to fire qualifying scores for this event. It’s quite an honor to be invited to attend this event. Good Luck to Lana, Kohl and Amanda – and HOLD HARD.

This completes the 22nd year of our Junior Marksmanship program and I think it was another great season. We had a lot of advanced juniors attend the Fall Marksmanship Program, and we had a lot of new shooters in the winter session. It was great to have many of our junior competitors attend events in Bismarck, Minot, Devils Lake, Grand Forks and Ayr. To everyone, I hope you had fun in our program this year. For some of you, our club championship may have been your first match, or maybe you fired a few events this season. I hope you had some success. For shooters, this doesn’t mean you necessarily piled up some medals or trophies – although that is fun to do. Success is really measured in your ability to achieve your goals. You may not have had the best score on the bulletin sheet – but if you achieve your goals at a match – that is success. For those that have competed in several events this season and have fired a personal best at a match – you know what I mean. All in all – I think all of you were successful shooters this season – Congratulations!

Be sure to thank our coaches and others that helped with the program including Tina, Dave and Mary Kay Tokach, Dave Bruschwein and Walt Fairbanks. I would also like to thanks Tom and Melody Schiwal, Dave Hintz, Sandy Fried and Joe Jarding, and all the other parents that helped out with scoring targets and setting up and taking down the range for practices and matches. It takes a lot of volunteer time and effort to put on this program and I appreciate everyone’s help.

I hope to see everyone back for the Advanced Junior Marksmanship program this fall. The advanced program is for juniors that intend to compete in 2014-15 shooting events including the State Junior Olympic Qualifier match usually held in Minot in January, 2015. The sign-up session will be sometime around Thursday, September 18, 2014. That’s it for this season and I hope to see everyone back next season. Until then, take care and good shooting!
